Bowls News

Saturday League ended in April where JBA tried a new playing structure for the league system.
The system has been poorly received and working committees have been set up by JBA to get input from the various bowls clubs to try and resolve all the issues.
Old Parks Bowls has been involved and will continue to be involved to assist JBA in finding the solution.

Final League Standings

Taking into consideration that the league ended on in an anti- climax with the passing of Winnie Mandela and the JBA stopping the last league games due to the state funeral status, the Men's league did fairly well , with the ladies league struggling but holding their own.

Men's Club League Division 2  - finished  in 3rd place
Men's Super 8 Division 1 - finished in 3rd place
Men's Super 8 Division 2 - finished in 5th place
Men's Super 8 Division 4 - finished in 7th place

Ladies Division1 - finished in 8th place
Ladies  Super 8 Division 1 - finished in 8th place.

JBA Pairs took place in April and we had a number of entries from Old Parks Bowls . Gary Austin and Chris Rogers made it through to the last 8 .
Pro 10  Pairs  we had Old Parks representation and Alta Ginsberg and Karen Mason made it through to the last 16.
The Men's  Nationals was held in Port Elizabeth from the 11th May to the 19th of May and Old Parks had two teams representing Gauteng. This tournament is represented by all bowlers in the country and is played at a very high level.
Both teams tried their best but did not have the rub of the greens.

Tabs is still being well supported on a Saturday and Sunday and of course Cynthia is still getting through all the internal competitions.
Old Parks Bowls has also managed to attract some new bowls members to the game which we are very excited about and we have managed to increase our membership to +/- 85 members from +/- 73 members last season.

Finances remain well controlled and in a good state of affairs and we are looking at some new projects which will require fund raising  from the committee. i.e. Building Brick banks for the Robin Craggs , Looking into lights for night bowls league.

Fund Raisers:

Shelia Fox Day was held in March and was a great success and all the ladies enjoyed the day. We managed to raise some funds out of the day.
Appio Trips coming up at the end of July - August which is also a large fundraiser for the Bowls Club and we are hoping for good entries for the 5 weekend tournament.
Gauteng Open where Old Parks will be hosting the Men's Pairs - beginning of July and we make some funds.

Thanks to our ground staff Willie and Thomas and Lena and Cynthia who are always ready to assist and sort things out when requested.
Thanks also must go to Lizette and the Barman who are always on call when they can assist.

Over all Bowls is in a good position financially and growing in the right direction and we will keep striving to make Old Parks the Club of choice.

Congratulations to our Bowlers for a successful season they had :). Looking forward to the JBA fours is taking place from the 3rd June with plenty of sides representing Old Parks.

Good Bowling to all.

About the Bowls section

The Old Parktonian Sports Club Bowls Section was founded in 1962 with one green.

The Clubhouse and a second green were built in the early 70’s.

The Bowls Section now boasts 2 well maintained greens appropriately named after two prominent members – namely Lawrie Locke and Robin Craggs.

The surrounding gardens make these greens amongst the most attractive in the region.

The club facilities are sought after as venues for competitions and tournaments under the auspices of the JBA.
